Hunter mum and champion for change, Kylie Facer, receives Order of Australia honour 

In a well-deserved recognition of her dedication and passionate work within the cerebral palsy community, CPA mum and early detection advocate, Kylie Facer, has been awarded the prestigious Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2024 Australia Day honours. 

This significant honour highlights Kylie’s outstanding services to community health and charity, including her contributions to Cerebral Palsy Alliance, the Stroke Foundation, and Little Stroke Warriors – the non-profit she founded in 2017 after her daughter Anika was affected by childhood stroke. 

Kylie’s journey began seven years ago with the birth of her daughter, Anika, who faced early challenges due to seizures and a subsequent stroke. At just six weeks of age, a referral to CPA soon became life changing. The early intervention not only allowed Anika to thrive but also positioned her as a trailblazer for treatments for babies who had suffered strokes. 

Reflecting on this period, Kylie told Australian Community Media, “This incredible little girl has thrived thanks to that early intervention.” 

Empowering families: the Hunter Early Diagnosis Clinic 

Driven by a deep sense of purpose, Kylie’s commitment extended to opening CPA’s world-first regional Early Diagnosis Clinic in the Hunter region of New South Wales. Situated at Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s Stuart Centre in Croudace Bay, this clinic is set to make a substantial impact on the lives of infants in Newcastle and the Hunter region. 

The Hunter Early Diagnosis Clinic addresses a critical need for early identification of cerebral palsy, a condition affecting 34,000 Australians, with more than 50% of cases not diagnosed until over 12 months of age. As the first Early Diagnosis Clinic in a regional area, it serves the 30% of children with CP residing outside major urban centres, providing essential services and bridging the gap in early intervention.

The Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the General Division is a testament to Kylie’s exceptional dedication and impact within the cerebral palsy community.
