Cerebral Palsy Alliance, in conjunction with Triple P Stepping Stones Project, are offering Wagga Wagga families help with tackling some of the most common issues for parents of a child with a disability.

Three free 90 minute seminars will be held at covering a range of important topics, from positive parenting skills to managing problem behavior.

Jo-Anne Hewitt, Head of Client Services at Cerebral Palsy Alliance, said the seminars form part of the Stepping Stones Triple P Positive Parenting Program, one of the world’s most effective parenting programs based on evidence from ongoing research.

“Children with a disability can face added frustrations, such as difficulties in communicating and interacting with their peers, which can add to the challenges that parents often face with their children” said Jo-Anne.

“We want parents of children with a disability to realise they are not alone. These seminars aim to prevent severe behavioural, emotional and developmental problems in children by building parents’ confidence, competence and resilience”.

“Children who grow up with positive parenting are more likely to develop skills they need to do well at school, build friendships and feel good about themselves. They are also much less likely to develop behavioural or emotional problems when they get older.”

“Similarly, parents who use positive parenting skills feel more confident and competent about managing day-to-day family life. They are also less stressed, less depressed and have less conflict with their partners over parenting issues.”

Parents are encouraged to attend all three seminars. To give parents greater flexibility, the seminars will be held at two locations and times for each session:

  • Seminar 1: Positive Parenting for Children With a Disability
    • 15th September, 7 – 9pm: Cerebral Palsy Alliance OR
    • 16th September, 10am – 12pm: Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service
  • Seminar 2: Helping Your Child Reach Their Potential
    • 13th October, 7-9pm: Cerebral Palsy Alliance OR
    • 14th October, 10am – 12pm, Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service
  • Seminar 3: Changing Problem Behaviour into Positive Behaviour
    • 27th October, 7-9pm, Cerebral Palsy Alliance OR
    • 28th October, 10am – 12pm, Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service

“I’d encourage all parents and carers of children with a disability living in the region, from age 2 to 12 years, to register to attend these free seminars so they can share their experiences and develop strategies for their child’s next development stage”, finished Jo-Anne.
