Each fortnight Nowra mum Lenice and her two children look forward to catching up with other families at Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s Support Group, MyTime.

The FREE group is one of the many parent and carer support groups provided by Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

It’s also one of the few opportunities for the mother of 3 year old Dexter who has cerebral palsy and younger sister, Charlotte to unwind and connect with other families sharing similar experiences.

Lenice was first put in touch with Cerebral Palsy Alliance around 2 years ago, when Dexter was 9 months old and this is when she also first heard about MyTime.

To ensure parents can really relax and get the most out of the group, a playgroup for children is run by a team of volunteers while parents meet.

‘I feel like it is a safe place to say what is on your mind and not have to explain everything to do with Dexter and his CP. I love that people share their stories – the good ones and the bad. I love that you can use language that is understood. Most of all, I love the connection with people that just get it,’ said Lenice.

Mandy Muller, Community Development Project Officer at Cerebral Palsy Alliance in Nowra, says the group offers participants a chance to meet and exchange knowledge with others and that can be sometimes what is needed.

‘I feel comforted seeing the other mums, knowing that they have survived and that they do it with a smile,’ said Lenice.
