How to fund an iPad through your NDIS plan

For many people with a communication disorder, iPads are an easy-to-use and highly functional communication tool, particularly when combined with the right communication app.

iPads can also be great for children and babies under two because they’re fun! The fun motivation factor can help children make significant developmental leaps in language, cognition and fine motor skills.

Yet getting iPads funded by the NDIS can be tricky. While iPads can also be used as an educational tool, a therapeutic device and a behaviour monitor, the NDIS will only fund iPads as a communication device.

At CPA, our speech pathologists have significant expertise in assessing and recommending the right options, depending on your individual needs. So we asked CPA Speech Pathologist Rachael McGlynn from Tuggerah for some tips:

  • iPads are considered to be low cost, low risk assistive technology under the Daily Adaptive Equipment line item in Core Supports. If you are not self-managing that portion of your Plan, there are NDIS-registered organisations who can purchase iPads and iTunes credit (for communication apps) on your behalf, such as Ability Technology.
  • If funds are not available in your current plan, and your Speech Pathologist has determined that an iPad is the best option for a communication device, ask them to submit an Assistive Technology Request to the NDIS. As the NDIS now advise that iPad are all considered Level 3 Assistive Technology, therapists need to submit an application, not just request the core supports funding in the next Plan. That said, at this time there are still some suppliers providing iPads from the Daily Adaptive Equipment budget, as it still meets the criteria for consumables. If in doubt ask your Speech Pathologist for guidance.

  • If you can, ask for these funds to be self-managed – this can make it easier for you to purchase an iPad yourself.

  • If you do not have funds for Daily Adaptive Equipment included in your Plan at all, ask for a trial and assessment from your Speech Pathologist. Following this assessment, they can complete an NDIS Assistive Technology Assessment for you to submit to the NDIS to request funding for the recommended iPad and communication app.
