6 tips to help you prepare for your year 2 NDIS plan

If you are coming to the end of your first year in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), now is the time to assess what you need for year two and to take steps to ensure that you get it.

First up, if you haven’t already done so, take a look at NDIS second year plan checklist. It outlines the information you need to take to your year 2 planning meeting with your National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) planner.

Then prepare for your interview by following these steps to ensure that you are the best advocate for your needs or the needs of your son or daughter.

1. Be in the know  

In the whirlwind of the initial transition onto the NDIS a number of clients, families and advocates feel they were not well enough informed to appropriately manage their first NDIS plan.

Prior to the creation of your second NDIS Plan, you may want to review the resources the NDIS has developed to assist you in thinking about what you would like in your next plan.

These resources will enable you to think about your short, medium and long-term goals and what kind of supports you might need to help you achieve these.

Make the most of your second year by seizing the opportunity to re-evaluate your goals and aspirations.

2. Think outside the box

The NDIS offers more than your traditional disability services and support so become creative and really think about the supports you require.

Start re-imagining your future. Think about what:

  • You want to try
  • You like doing and want to keep doing
  • You want to change
  • Could improve your morale and make daily activities easier.

3. Be clear about your goals

Do your goals include improved communication or review of mobility? Are they related to improving your health such as wanting help with losing weight? Are they skills-based like learning how to cook healthy meals? Are do you want to gain more independence?

Once you have defined your goals, consider the supports you will need to help you to achieve them.  For example, do you need advice from an exercise physiologist, speech pathologist, psychologist, physiotherapist or youth coach?

Take some time to research and decide what will best serve you in the coming year.

4. Be specific

You’ve set your goals and have an idea of the supports that are required to achieve them. Now is the time to double check them.

You know yourself or your family member best – the more specific the goals and services you request, the more likely it is that they’ll get approved.


5. Keep records

A big part of your initial planning meeting with the NDIS may have included writing down your goals and the supports and bringing this to the meeting with your planner. But not everyone has had the opportunity to meet face to face with a planner so to ensure nothing is forgotten when discussing your second year plan, do this:  

  • Before you go and see a planner keep a diary and jot down notes about barriers or outcomes you foresee in the future.
  • Keep a record of all service agreements and quotes you have obtained during year one. If these services/supports are required moving forward these will be valuable resources.

6. Constantly review your needs and your goals

Do not be surprised if your second NDIS plan looks different to your first plan. It is good to review and reassess what you need.

During the planning process, you may have identified different supports and different support providers than those in your first plan. Under your second plan you’ll have more opportunities to expand on your goals and aspirations and the supports you need to achieve these.

Also, review if your current plan management arrangement is working well for you. Are there any parts you would like to manage/not manage?

If you’re not managing parts of your NDIS plan but would like to, you can include this in your plan along with the supports you would need to be able to achieve this.

Remember, if you find your plan isn’t working for you, go back to your Local Area Coordinator or your Support Coordinator and get the changes you need to make it work for you through a plan review.
