Making pizza and cookies supports your child’s goals

Pizza and cake don’t sound like a usual therapy session, but you would be surprised at what skills your child or young teen old will learn while having fun with their peers.

Croudace Bay Occupational Therapist Emma Virtue is dusting off the chef hats and aprons, finding the best recipe and collating all the ingredients for a fun cooking day for children. Kids in the kitchen is a fun group activity for children who love to help in the kitchen or might like to try. And they won’t even notice they are practising a range of life skills.

How can cooking help your child achieve their own individual goals?

  • Fun way to practice skills like planning, memory and problem solving. We will be working with the children and teens on planning the recipes and ingredients, making a list and working out the best way to make the food.
  • Practise fine motor and bimanual skills while cutting up and preparing food. Even sprinkling ingredients on a pizza helps with hand-eye coordination.
  • Cooking is just one of the life skills that is never too early to learn. We even talk about healthy eating and food groups to help make good food choices, but also when it’s OK to indulge in the sometimes foods.
  • Great ideas for you to take away and do together in the home. And it’s a fun way for you as a parent to bring activities that practise skills, like fine motor, into the home in a way that everyone can participate and enjoy.
  • Learn to follow instructions and work as part of a team! Everyone will work through the recipe together, helping build communication and team work skills.
  • It’s a great way to find everyday ways to use the therapy skills.
  • It’s fun, it’s delicious and it’s run by our therapists who are super excited about the group!

At the end of the day you can all dig into the pizza and baked goods together. Maybe you could then try making them at home!

The fun cooking day is open for children and young teens with a range of disabilities.

Kids in the kitchen runs on 12 April from 10am – 1pm.
