What is PEERS?

PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) is an evidence based social skills intervention program for motivated teens and young adults who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends.

Participants benefit from the interactive weekly classes, which provide the opportunity to practice new skills, during each session and then again at home or in a familiar environment.

 

Who is PEERS for?

PEERS for high functioning Teens and young adults with Autism. PEERS is also suitable for adolescents and young adults who may have:

  • ADHD
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Other social and behavioural concerns

 

Specialised program for teens (13 to 17 years)

To ensure your young person is suitable for PEERS, that they will be comfortable attending and will have positive outcomes our youth coach will meet one on one with the teen and their family member, to better understand your young person’s needs and what you as a family and parent are looking to achieve.

To maximise learnings and outcomes from the program it is essential for at least one parent to attend the program with the teen. Parents attend separate sessions at the same time and are taught how to assist and support their teen both during and following the program.

PEERS for 13 to 17 year olds targets topics and issues particularly relevant to this age cohort. During the 16 week program participants will be exposed to a range of skills and topics, including:

  • How to use appropriate conversational skills
  • How to choose appropriate friends
  • How to appropriately use electronic forms of communication 
  • How to appropriately use humour and assess humor feedback
  • How to start, enter and exit conversations between peers
  • How to organize successful get-togethers with friends
  • How to be a good sport when playing games/sports with friends
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements with friends and in relationships
  • How to handle rejection, teasing, bullying, rumours/gossip, and cyber bullying
  • How to change a bad reputation 

 

Specialised program for young adults (18 to 24 years)

PEERS is for Young adults is for those who are interested in learning skills to make and keep friends. During each group session, young adults are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills.

Before starting the program each participant attends a one on one evaluation session. During the session our Youth Coach will ensure the program is right for you and the goals you are working towards.

PEERS for 18 to 24 year olds targets topics and issues particularly relevant to this age cohort. During the 16 week program participants will be exposed to a range of skills and topics, including:

  • How to choose appropriate friends
  • How to appropriately use electronic forms of communication
  • How to appropriately use humour and assess humour feedback
  • How to start, enter, and exit conversations between peers
  • How to organize successful get-togethers with friends
  • How to develop and use appropriate dating etiquette
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements with friends 
  • How to handle rejection, teasing, bullying, and rumours/gossip

 

Places are limited

Consideration for eligibility will be made on a first come first served basis. Advice is available on how to structure this using some of your NDIS funding.
