Does your child have hemiplegia or monoplegia? They will love this fun way of learning to use their affected arm.

Treasure Island CIMT is an intensive 9 day program for children with hemiplegia or monoplegia to learn to reach and pick up and release objects using their affected arm.

Its full name is Constraint Induced Movement Therapy and it’s based on the latest research around neural plasticity of the brain, but your child won’t realise this. They’ll just be delighted to be playing games with a pirate and Treasure Island theme.

To book call 8878 3500, email RydeAdmin@cerebralpalsy.org.au or complete the form.

CIMT is run by experienced occupational therapists who provide quality therapy techniques in a fun environment that will also help your child build self-esteem, self-confidence and develop friendships.

You can use your National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) package to purchase this service under Improved Daily Living Skills.

What’s involved?

Your child will be individually assessed to determine their skill level and to set goals for the therapy.

This is followed by the intensive group program which involves:

  • The use of a hand mitt or arm sling to constrain the non-affected arm while engaging your child with fun activities to entice them to move the affected arm
  • A custom-designed home program to further develop their skills at home
  • Coaching for you to maximise the benefits of the home program
  • Reassessment at the end to see how much your child has progressed.

Taking part will also give your child the opportunity to meet and socialise with other children who have hemiplegia or monoplegia, whilst improving their hand skills.

Parents from a recent CIMT Intensive said

“It was fantastic. She's using her hand more and also learnt to work in a group and wait her turn.” Sarah

“I wanted my son to gain some function in his weak hand and he did. It gave him confidence.” Pippa

“I have seen so much improvement! I will always be thankful that Ella has learnt more ways to be independent and use both hands.” Renee
