Have you thought about joining a Self Advocacy Group?
Self-advocacy groups are run by people with disabilities who have joined together to have their viucwes heard and support each other.
They work together to make sure they have the same rights, choices and opportunities as anyone else.
Self-advocacy groups are about:
- Speaking up for your rights and helping others do the same
- Supporting each other to say what you think and what you need
- Learning and sharing information, ideas and skills
- Planning and working together for change
- Meeting new people and making friends
- Teaching people in the community about your rights, needs and issues
- Strength in numbers
- Creating change
IDEAS (Information on Disability and Education Awareness Services) facilitates 2 self Advocacy Groups:
BONDI JUNCTION SELF ADVOCACY GROUP:
A dynamic group of people who meet together to discuss issues affecting people with disability.
They share ideas for speaking up and encourage each other.
This group also actively participates in discussions with government and community and seeks to prompte inclusion.
Afternoon tea is provided.
WHEN: The last Thursday of each month
WHERE: Theory Room, Level 1, Waverly Library, Denison Street, Bondi Junction
SHOALHAVEN SELF ADVOCACY GROUP:
This group meets to share ideas for speaking up, promoting inclusion and to provide encourage to each other.
There is a strong social element to this group, and they regularly meet in a social setting outside of the meetings.
Lunch is provided.
WHEN: The first Saturday of each month
TIME: 11.30am – 2.00pm
