About MyTime
MyTime groups provide facilitated peer support for mums, dads, grandparents and anyone caring for children with a disability, developmental delay or chronic medical condition. MyTime gives parents the chance to socialise and share ideas with others who understand the rewards and intensity of the caring role. Parents can meet with people in similar circumstances to have fun, hear from others and find out about available community support.
Research-based parenting information is also available at group meetings.
Occasionally, additional parent activities are held - such as, quad bike riding, deep-sea fishing trips, pamper days and lunches.
Each group is supported by two workers – a facilitator for parents and a play helper for children. The facilitator works with the parent group, helping them get to know each other and decide on topics or activities for their group to discuss. The play leader is employed to be with the children so parents share their experiences and knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Cerebral Palsy Alliance coordinates 16 MyTime groups across the state including a telephone group. Some groups are informal, some more structured depending on the group of parents.
The MyTime Program is coordinated nationally by the Parent Research Centre. MyTime is a national initiative funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
