About Flexible Respite

The Cerebral Palsy Alliance offers two types of flexible respite for families who are caring for a person with a disability. These are the Time Out Program and Older Carer Flexible Respite.

Time Out Program (TOP) Flexible Respite

TOP offers flexible respite packages to people caring for a person with a disability aged 0-65 years of age who live in the Orana Far West or Central West regions of NSW.

These packages allow the families or carers to source the respite services that best suit their circumstances. Each package is between $1000 - $3000, with an average package being $1500.  The packages are available each new financial year, and the funding must be spent within the financial year.

Each year, approximately 40 packages are provided in the Central West and 35 packages in the Orana Far West. The packages are allocated through an Intake Panel. Applications may be made during a 6 week period in April and May each year.

Older Carer Flexible Respite

Older Carer Flexible Respite offers flexible respite packages to parents who are over 60 years (or 55 if Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander), who are caring for a person with a disability at home.

These packages offer a flexible and individually planned short term break for parents that are tailored to meet the needs of their child with a disability and the family. Each package aims to deliver 168 hours of respite. Older Carer packages are available each new financial year and the funding must be spent within the financial year.

The packages administered by Cerebral Palsy Alliance are available in the Northern and South Western Sydney metropolitan areas, and Hunter and Central West areas of NSW. They are predominantly for people caring for someone with cerebral palsy, although people with other physical disabilities may apply. A limited number of packages are available in each region.

Relax and Recharge Respite Program

Relax and Recharge is a pilot flexible respite program which allows families to create their own package of respite support using their own informal networks and care arrangements. Families are provided with a small grant which is given as 6 monthly installments for either 1 or 2 years.

Relax and Recharge is open to selected families who are currently accessing the services of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance and who are caring for their son or daughter at home.

Families are invited to participate in this program in September/October each year, and are contacted by mail. As funds are limited, only 99 families across the state are able to participate in any given year.

This pilot program is offered across NSW and places are allocated based on local demand with an emphasis on supporting rural families.

There is no cost to participate in the program, although participating are encouraged to review their household insurance cover to ensure that it includes domestic worker cover.
