About the International Program

Cerebral Palsy Alliance contributes to Australia’s international aid efforts by offering training and consultancy to improve the lives of people with a disability in the Asia Pacific region.

Our work has been enabled through the generous assistance of government, in-country partners and international charities.

How We Work

As a registered training organisation, we work to build futures for people with a disability in countries that are developing, by:

  • sharing skills and knowledge through educational training, coaching, mentoring and practical application through clinics and fieldwork
  • facilitating community and leadership development activities
  • fostering sustainability, capacity-building and strategic planning in conjunction with established local services and agencies (including DPOs - Disabled Persons' Organisations)
  • working to support individuals with a disability and their extended support network. Our holistic approach may include helping people to understand the nature of the disability, social communication, disability awareness, rights and inclusive practices.

Our Projects

Fiji

Cerebral Palsy Alliance's International Program began in Fiji in 2006. Offered in partnership with Australian Volunteers International and Fiji Crippled Children Society, the project supported grassroots community workers – community rehabilitation assistants (CRA), parents, carers, teachers in special education and people with disabilities.

The program became known as CAL:

C - Competency based training
A - Assessment and consultancy
L - Local community solutions

CAL was a 3-year program comprising the key components of clinical support, training and local planning to increase access to quality community based rehabilitation for people with disabilities.

With our continued support, the program is now offered as a Certificate in Community Disability and Rehabilitation by the Fiji School of Medicine, Fiji National University. More details at www.fsm.ac.fj.
