About TASC

TASC (Technology solutions for computer Access, Seating and Communications) is a specialist service for people with a disability who have complex needs for technology, seating and mobility.

TASC comprises two services, which work closely together:

  • TASC Consultative Services, which is an assessment and training consultancy
  • TASC Equipment Services, which is a workshop that manufactures custom seating.

TASC Services

The services of TASC include:

  • Advice and information via phone or email and TechnoTalk, a bi-monthly newsletter
  • Training sessions – via the Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s ActionPACT training calendar or customised to individual or group requirements
  • Therapy consultations
  • Comprehensive assessments and reports
  • Medico legal assessments (fee for service)
  • Manufacture of custom seating and accessories for wheelchairs.

The TASC Team

TASC employs highly skilled professionals from various backgrounds including occupational therapy, speech pathology, physiotherapy and technical areas who have specialist knowledge and skills in the assistive technology areas of:

  • Alternate access to the computer (hardware and software)
  • Alternatives to handwriting
  • Speech generating devices
  • Environmental control systems
  • Switch access to technology
  • Mounting and positioning for devices and switches
  • Custom seating systems
  • Powered mobility.

TASC is a consultative service and requires active input from a client’s primary therapy team to support the client throughout the assessment, trial and implementation process for the recommended seating/technology.

Who is Eligible?

TASC provides services to clients of all ages. TASC’s specialist skills are in the areas of physical disability and complex communication impairment. Our priority group for services is clients with cerebral palsy.

For clients requiring technology assessments, TASC also offers services to clients with degenerative neurological disorders (e.g. Motor Neurone Disease), acquired/traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, autism, intellectual disability and complex communication impairments (e.g. developmental apraxia of speech).

For clients requiring seating or powered mobility assessments, TASC also offers service to people with a complex physical disability requiring custom seating, alternate access to powered mobility, or interfacing of powered mobility with other assistive technology.

When is it Available?

Monday to Friday, 9.00 am – 5.00 pm. Administration is available from 8.00 am – 4.00 pm.

Where is it Available?

TASC provides services across NSW and the ACT. Outreach clinics occur three times a year for both technology and seating services in the ACT. Outreach clinics to other rural areas are arranged on an as needs basis.

Cost

TASC charges fee for service for the following:

  • compensable clients (e.g. medico legal, Lifetime Care and Support, YPIRAC, WorkCover, etc.)
  • travel costs for non Cerebral Palsy Alliance clients in regional/rural areas
  • lecturing and training
  • clients attending NSW Department of Education schools who require assistive technology to access the curriculum are eligible for services under a funding agreement with those schools
  • technicians’ labour costs for manufacture of equipment

A Guide for Therapists

The Powered Mobility Manual is a comprehensive guide to Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s approach to powered mobility intervention. It is free for therapists in other services to download and use in their own practice.

The manual offers a range of new tools for therapists to use to gather powered mobility-specific information, to guide and record evaluation, to assist with comparing powered wheelchairs and to guide skill development and outcome measurement.
