About the Centre for Conductive Education

The Centre for Conductive Education offers centre-based programs for children and teenagers with cerebral palsy. It is located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Conductive Education is a systematic and holistic approach to develop problem- solving skills through an educational program for people with cerebral palsy. It is not a therapy, but a multidisciplinary system that aims to enhance a person’s physical, cognitive, social skills and emotional wellbeing.

There are four main elements of Conductive Education:

  • The Conductor, who teaches, facilitates and motivates the group, observing and modifying the student's performance to ensure that the student works to their potential.
  • The Group, where new meaningful skills can be integrated into everyday living.
  • Task Series, where tasks to be learned are analysed and divided into a series of smaller steps.
  • Rhythmic Intention, which assists the student to use their speech or inner speech to express intention. Repeating this intention provides a rhythm or pace at which to carry out the movement, as such, language is used to overcome movement problems.
